ST SWITHUN'S CHURCH
During restoration works to this Grade 2* listed church the finely carved limewood angels appeared to have woodworm. We inspected and found the infestation was clearly active with piles of fresh frass. Lime is vulnerable to insect attack, associated naturally resilient oak roofing timbers were sound.
We carried out targeted timber treatment to just the affected angels, there was no finish applied to the wood so the insecticide soaked into the naturally absorbent timber to provide an effective invisible treatment.
If you are impressed by the carved angels, look in the North Aisle to see papier mache elephants (reputedly from the Paris Exhibition of 1855) fixed to each hammer beam end!
