Stonehouse was approached by a repeat client to assist with this large, new-build project very close to the Queen Elizabeth Park and Olympic Stadium.
The project included a residential block of flats with a large fully earth-retaining basement and a lower ground floor structure, partially earth-retaining on two elevations. Already complex in terms of structural waterproofing, this installation also required an independently certified, double-assessed ground gas protection system.
Richard Allen of Stonehouse specified a combined internal Type A & Type C waterproofing system utilising Koster NB1 waterproofing slurry and Newton CDM 508R. The exposed concrete structure was first inspected for any obvious defects and all construction joints were reinforced using Koster Repair Mortar Plus. Service entry ducts were sealed at both faces using Koster KB-Flex 200. The concrete structure (walls and floor) was treated with Koster Polysil TG-500 which acts as a primer for the concrete structure and as a lime inhibitor. Koster NB1 was spray applied to the retaining walls at lower ground floor level with two coats to all walls and floor slab within the basement as an internal Type A waterproofing barrier.
Our operative team then roller-applied the internal ground gas barrier – Memtech Pro Liquid Gas Barrier. This offers continuous passive gas prevention against the ingress of methane, carbon dioxide, radon, ground gas, VOC, air and moisture into buildings.
The gas barrier was independently tested and certified prior to installing the internal Type C cavity membrane. For this Stonehouse specified a Newton 508R system. The system drains to a Newton Titan Pro Sump with two Newton NP400eco pumps, a high-level alarm and battery back-up system. All fixing plugs used to fit the membrane were resin-bonded into position, providing fully sealed fixings with the heads taped over. All joints within the membrane system were double sealed to comply with the Ground Gas Protection system. There was a second and final independent assessment at this point.
