Our long-standing client, Gilbert Ash, was appointed the main contractor for refurbishing and extending Theatr Clwyd, the Grade 2 Listed regional arts centre and Wales’ main producing theatre.
The waterproofing was divided into phases given the numerous locations and differing requirements of waterproofing each section of the building. This included a complex mixture of waterproofing below-ground elements of the original structure and protecting proposed retaining elevations and sections of the new build extension.
Stonehouse’s senior surveyor Richard Allen is highly experienced and fully qualified to design and oversee this project armed with, in this case, the most advanced and appropriate range of Newton waterproofing products.
All completed on-budget, on-schedule and ready for curtain up – oh no it wasn’t, oh yes it was!

New-build Foyer and Workshop
An external pre-applied sheet membrane Newton 403 Hydrobond was chosen to protect the ground bearing slabs and partially retaining elevations of the new Foyer and Workshop. All detailing was achieved using Hydrobond 2K Flex. This system was completed and reinforced with an internal Type A cementitious flexible waterproofing system Hydrocoat 107 Elastic 2k resulting in a combined internal and external Type A waterproofing system.Foyer

Existing Basement Cinema
Stonehouse specified and installed an internal Type C waterproofing system utilising Newton CDM 508R. The system protects the ground bearing floor slab and three retaining elevations (to a maximum height of 4 metres) and drains out naturally to the only open elevation. At this point water is directed into the existing clean water drainage system via the Newton perimeter Floordrain.




Lift Pits
Hydrocoat 107 Elastic 2k was applied to the internal face of four passenger lift pits, one goods lift pit and a services riser pit as an internal Type A barrier. The system was in combination with the formation of watertight concrete, a Type B structure as defined in BS8102:2022.
